Kiwi siblings moving into our nocturnal habitat

Matariki 4

Our lovely brown kiwi, Matariki, is ‘leaving the nest’ as part of the Zoo Aquarium Association (ZAA) North Island Brown Kiwi Species Management Programme.

Through the programme, she has been paired with a male kiwi and, on 22 July, she will be moving to an outdoor facility where she will have the opportunity to breed, helping to increase the population of kiwi. During this time, the nocturnal habitat will be closed while we take the opportunity to replace soil, plants and refresh the space ready for two new guests who are siblings.

Once we’ve allowed time for the new kiwi siblings to settle in, we will re-open the habitat in early August for you to meet them.
