Deep dive into sea forests

Forests of the Seas July 2024 10

It includes some of the most beautiful and mysterious things in the ocean, in a variety of colours, textures, patterns and forms. It has health benefits for humans, and gives nutrients and energy to fish and other sea life. It provides a nursery for young mussels, lobster and pāua, and a home for countless other creatures. The existence of nearly all marine life depends on it and there are over 850 different types native to Aotearoa New Zealand! What is it? Seaweed, of course!

Forests of the Sea celebrates the unsung heroes of the moana. The exhibition runs at the National Aquarium of New Zealand from Friday 28 June to Sunday 1 September.

Rachel Haydon, General Manager of the National Aquarium, explains each species has its own story to tell.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to get up close to the forms of different seaweeds all the while staying dry. We have carefully recreated different species so people can see how beautiful they are, without us damaging real algae,” says Rachel. “Journey beneath the waves and into the heart of some of the ocean's most enchanting ecosystems.

“From the majestic bull kelp to the delicate sea lettuce, these botanical marvels will deliver people deep into the world of marine flora to learn about these wonderful organisms that give so much to the world – including the oxygen for every second breath we take!

“These underwater forests provide sanctuary for countless marine creatures, combat climate change, and safeguard precious coastlines,” Rachel says. “Forests of the Sea will be an immersive experience shedding light on the vital role of seaweed in the marine environments.”

National Aquarium of New Zealand is presenting the exhibition in collaboration with 'Love Rimurimu' from the Mountains to Sea Trust.
